Tonight! New Philosophy in Public Spaces Online Event: Saturday at Seven – Will as Illusion

The new PIP’s national online group starts this Saturday evening (2nd Oct, 7pm). See website schedule here. A number of groups have gone back to meeting in the pub, with others slowly returning, however the benefits of online access is evident, particularly for those who may not live near a local group, or prefer not to attend pub sessions at the moment. Being able to provide country-wide access via a permanent online group we hope to give all our members and subscribers a chance to enjoy the serious informality of a PIPs style community philosophy group.

The intention is to run the meeting on symposium lines, involving a short stimulus, then into breakout rooms (discuss/question) voting, then to main enquiry. The topic for this Saturday’s meeting is Will as Illusion . The idea that we ‘will’ our actions (those that are not obviously forced on us for whatever reason) is central to our view of what it is to be an autonomous person. It appears through the exercise of ‘will’ we weigh up the pros and cons, decide what to do then will the appropriate activity. There seems to be no problem with this, it’s part of everyone’s experience, or so it seems. Things get more problematic when the wanting to do something is not smoothly linked with the process of willing it

Future topics will be proposed and presented by group members as we go. All are welcome, hope to see you there.
